So, I decided to teach Catullus to my ninth grade this week. I brought in my Catullus books, which I’ve collected throughout the years. This morning I sat down to read over some. By accident, I flipped to the back of my “The Poems of Catullus” by Horace Gregory book, and I found a message. Cool! I thought to myself, for all these books are used and undoubtedly some often have scrawl written in them. However, this message was for me…! It said:
“Magistra*—
the book is not quite what I thought—
a metaphor for life.
loveyou,
ME.”
It was from my sister. She must have bought me this book (probably at The Strand, back in her college days). It meant the world to me to see this message. There’s something eerie, almost mystical about it. Like I always say, there’s a time and place for everything.
*Magistra = teacher in Latin
True story.
